Kodak Black has vowed to stop performing his hit single “Super Gremlin” now that he has (mostly) quit drugs.
Speaking on Instagram Live, the Florida-born rapper opened up about his complicated relationship with the platinum-certified song and his sobriety journey.
“I’m about to stop performing ‘Super Gremlin,’ period. I hate that lil’ shit,” he said. “I’m sober — for the most part […] Like Batman, I couldn’t have waited ’til, like, Saturday [to take drugs]. Now, I can wait a few days.
“It was like a n-gga was scared to be sober or something […] Now, I can do that. I can go two days without nothing, homie […] That’s motivation for n-ggas to feel like if the Gremlin can do it, y’all can do it.”
Kodak’s qualms with “Super Gremlin” rest on a viral lyric on the song where he raps: “I knew the Perc was fake, but I still ate it/ ‘Cause I’m a gremlin.”
During a concert last month, Yak expressed regret over the line and admitted that swalling a fake Percocet could’ve actually killed him.
Explaining his mindset while writing the rhyme, he said: “It’s sad, though, bruh ’cause I’m like, ‘That shit gon’ park in the mind so quick.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, I don’t wanna say this shit, but I know this bitch gonna do it, homie.’ A n-gga don’t play like that, bruh.
“When I was in my stage when I was taking Percs, I was torn. I swear to God, I was taking about 100 Percs a day. Averaged about [40 [a day]. If I was fucking with that fake shit, I woulda been dead, homie.”
He added: “Explaining myself now, I don’t want y’all to hear that and take that and think it’s ok to do that shit, you hear me? Hell no.”
After battling a series of drug habits and drug-related charges, Kodak revealed earlier this year that he’d gotten a handle on his prescription pill usage.
“I remember a point in my life when I was chewing a lot of Percs,” he said on Instagram Live in April. “Bro, I’m proud of myself. I’ve never been this happy in my life, bro. I don’t know where this came from, what the fuck going on.
“I ain’t even going to say I’m anti-Perc. Like, I never took a Perc since I been home. But bro, my dosage so low that I can’t believe it myself. Man, I’m telling y’all, bro.”
He continued: “Before I just went to jail, bro, I was taking… I can talk about this because it’s my testimony. Ain’t no shame in my shit. I was taking at least 100 Percs. Bro, my average was 40 Percocets.
“I’m telling y’all this man. I ain’t know, to the point where I look at this shit and be like, what the fuck was wrong with me, bruh? I listen to my music and be like, bro, what the fuck, fam?”
